MORRISVILLE — Morrisville committed 13 penalties for 110 yards on Friday night and still came away with a 10-6 win in a Bicentennial Athletic League football battle against Jenkintown in front of a large homecoming crowd.
“We have to commit more,” said Morrisville coach Bill Quill. “We played well for a couple of games, and they think that is the icing on the cake. It’s not that way.
“We’re not here to win two games; we’re here to win a championship, and I don’t know if they realize that. It could be our time, and we have a lot of good seniors on the team, but sometimes you have to question your leadership and your heart.
“It rips your heart out when you have something in the palm of your hands and you have a solid team to compete and play well, and we didn’t do that tonight.”
Morrisville and Jenkintown traded punts on the game’s first four series of the evening before the Bulldogs found a spark in the form of senior running back Raimy Valdez. He broke open a 40-yard run straight up the middle to the end zone with just 52 seconds remaining in the opening quarter.
With 6:55 before the intermission, the Bulldogs’ Mike Gable picked off a pass and gave his offense the ball on its own 33-yard line.
Nine plays later, Joe Goodwin banged home a 25-yard field goal to give Morrisville the 10-0 lead, and that’s the way the score remained through intermission.
“Our best player (Goodwin) of the game was our punter,” said Quill. “He has two big field goals in the last couple of games and his punting has been big for us.”
Early in the second half, the Drakes turned the ball over again, this time with Jhamir Ibezim recovering a fumble, but penalties moved the Bulldogs backwards and, again, they were forced to punt the ball away.
“When you get first-and-15, it’s tough,” said Quill.
“We nickel and dime people; we don’t try to make the big run; we get 6, 5 and 4 yards (at a time). When you have first-and-15, or 20, it’s tough for us to make the plays. We shot ourselves in the foot tonight with all of the penalties.
“I’m not sure if they are trying too hard at times, or they are just not focused, or maybe being over-aggressive. We had a couple of misconduct penalties, and we can’t do that.”
The Bulldogs committed four penalties for personal fouls and unsportsmanlike conduct, and had one other declined.
Jenkintown rushed for just 41 yards through 48 minutes, but did complete six passes for 116 yards, including a 32-yard scoring strike from Jamie Griffin to Michael McKernan with 1:57 left in regulation.
“Our run defense does well against a team that we can match up with,” Quill said. “We did really well with the run defense tonight, but we have to do better against the pass.”
The victory gave the Bulldogs four wins in a row, heading into a tough showdown next week with Lower Moreland. The win over Jenkintown marked the first time Morrisville had defeated the Drakes in nine years.
“Jenkintown was a good team, and they only had 19 or 20 kids dressed tonight, but they played hard and they are a well-coached team,” said Quill.
“We have Lower Moreland next week, and that is going to be a very tough game for us. We have to come back and get focused, and we lacked that this week. We have to come out and practice and play much harder.”

Nice evening, Good job team, congrats to the King and Queen. Nice to see graduates and old friends. The only thing missing was the ADMINISTRATION. Ferrara could care less about Morrisville, rumor has it he was in Abington on the Council Rock sidelines. Harm was probaly on another vacation. Lets go Dogs.

Why is a super coaching let alone coaching on a team in another district ? That's unuaual, right? You'd think a demanding position like super would preclude you from coaching too.

Bill Ferrara and Don Harm both coach football for Council Rock South. Google Council Rock South Football Coaching Staff and see their smiling faces.

The super who admitted he was spread too thin last year even with Harm.

Thanks for the good news, Donna! I think this might just be the year we beat Bristol.

Excellent Homecoming. If super and pres have their way, it will be the last.

Coaching at another district? What time is practice? Has to be 30 minute drive from the school. Not coming to your own homecoming?

If you don't get too close, you won't get attached. If you aren't invested, then you don't care. If you don't care, then it won't hurt when you remove it.

Oops. Didn't mean to delete that. I said something like:

Did the Band play the the Morrisville High School Alma Mater at the Homecoming Game? I assume you mean the fight song? Yes, they have been playing that every game since last year.

I honestly don't have a problem with Ferrara and Harm coaching if they have the time. Do either of them have (had?) a kid in that district?

Harm has the time he is retired from Pennsbury living the good life on Morrisville taxpayers money, he is probaly at Council Rock more than he is here. Ferrara on the other hand is our superintendant, his alligence is not here at Morrisville. He could care less about this town and school. Boadus Davis, former Bristol superintendant, was the basketball coach at Truman and administrator at Bensalem. They made him leave his coaching job because it was a conflict of interest. Ferrara should do the right thing and resign from Council Rock and worry about Morrisville. Harm can continue doing what he does, NOTHING.

No Pete the Alma Mater is not the fight song. We do have an Alma Mater. When I went to school, it was always played at halftime. The only time I have heard it recently, is when it is played at graduation.

The Morrisville High School Alma Mater is the school song, not a fight song. Mrs. Julie Habel, Mr Frank Podleiszek, and Mr. Horace Hutchinson taught the song to generations of Morrisville students in their music classrooms. When played by the band or on piano at a football game, concert, or graduation Morrisville students and graduates would stand respectfully, with pride in their school and sing:

To thee Morrisville High School, we raise our voices and to thine altars our praises we bring.
Thine be the glory, ours be the valor with honor, truth, and loyalty may thine halls ever ring.
Thine be the honor, ours be the service, true Alma Mater builder may we be to thee.

It is not a fight song, it is not about football, it is not about rockin' out. It is about pride in your school and community.

My goodness! Don't get so upset. Pete only asked a question. No need to spaz out!

It was not a spazout. It is about school pride and traditions. Donna said that she only heard it recently at graduation. If you want traditions to continue, you need to feed and nurture them. If you want alumni and community members to support the school you need those traditions to keep the connnections there. Wanda Kartal, Assunta Deliman, Julie Habel, and Donna Wilson all know about the Alma Mater... ask them if it was important.

Alma Mater? I think I went to High School with her.
