Free reading readiness program to help kindergarten students

Bucks County kids heading to kindergarten this school year can begin developing their reading skills during a free special program in August, organizers said.

The "Kindergarten Here I Am" program will be offered between Aug. 12 and Aug. 23 at Walt Disney Elementary School in Tullytown.

The children will participate in two-hour summer readiness sessions each day at the Pennsbury school off Lakeside Drive.

The program is open to kids who are enrolled in a kindergarten class in a Bucks County school during 2013-2014 and will be 5 years old by Sept. 1.

Participating families must meet financial guidelines, according to organizers. For instance, a family of four with an income of up to $69,000 per year can qualify for the program, they said.

The Pennsbury School District and the Morrisville YMCA are teaming up to sponsor the kindergarten readiness program, the organizers said. They are using a state Pre-K Counts grant to run the program.

Families have to submit an application to be considered for participation in the free initiative.

Wondering how many families that do qualify are aware of it or will actually take advantage of it?
