Bensalem OKs universal full-day kindergarten

Bensalem OKs universal full-day kindergarten By DANNY ADLER Staff writer Calkins Media, Inc. | 0 comments

Bensalem’s school board on Wednesday approved universal full-day kindergarten at all six elementary schools beginning at the start of the next school year.

One of the administration’s top priorities, the measure was approved by school directors Heather Nicholas, Kim Rivera, Elizabeth Cerasi, Ralph Douglass and Wayne Lewis. School board members Matthew Grodsky, Kevin McKay and Pamela Strange voted against the measure. School board member Yagnesh Choksi was absent from the meeting.

The vote came after more than 20 minutes of discussion at Wednesday’s school board meeting, and years of debate from previous boards.

Critics on the board questioned whether the district should institute the new program while the district faces a 2012-13 preliminary budget shortfall that calls for a tax increase of about $89 for the average taxpayer, as well as potential tax increases in the next few years.

Proponents said full-day kindergarten leads to more well-rounded students in the long-term and brings the district’s schools in line with charter and private schools in Bensalem that offer full-day kindergarten.

Officials have said that a full-day kindergarten program will cost the Bensalem Township School District an additional $500,000 to $600,000 next year. Earlier this month, a district spokeswoman said there are 119 full-day kindergarten students and 331 half-day kindergarten students.

Bensalem holds a lottery for kids looking to get into full-day kindergarten, with one class at each elementary school.

A pilot full-day program began in 2007-08 with two classes. In 2008-09, an accountability block grant helped expand the program to six full-day classes.

Superintendent David Baugh told the board Wednesday that if the school directors did not approve the full-day program, the district would provide only half-day kindergarten for 2012-13. He said the lottery for the six current full-day classes has been described as “unfair” and “an untenable situation.”

“I cannot continue to support the idea of a lottery,” the superintendent said.

While McKay agreed the lottery was unfair, he said the data he’s seen supporting full-day kindergarten is “ambivalent” and “anecdotal.”

Nicholas, the board’s president, said that if one observes both half-day kindergarten and full-day kindergarten classes, “you could see the difference.”

According to Baugh, full-day kindergarten “is the superior product.”

Obama will not OK the Keystone Pipeline because there is not enough time to review it. They OK'd healthcare reform without review. Pilosi said pass it; we'll fix it later. But the pipeline needs review.

It is reported that president Obama paid $50,000 each to the families of the killed Afghans. Did this money come from Obama's personal checking account or U.S. taxpayers?

By Pilosi, does he mean Pelosi, as in Nancy Pelosi?

He should have researched that before he sent his vent to the BCCT.

Who am I kidding, he doesn't research anything. He just ignorantly parrots right wing talking points.

He'll do anything John Boner tells him to do!

Hey Minder and other angry people of a certain age, did you know:

Per capita public spending on the elderly is 2.4 times public spending on the young?

We paid Afghanistan for the death of their people. When are they going to pay for all the men and women who were killed defending their country?
