Morrisville hikes borough taxes by nearly $73 in 2014

Posted: Tuesday, December 17, 2013 3:43 pm | Updated: 9:50 pm, Tue Dec 17, 2013.
By GEMA MARIA DUARTE Staff writer

Morrisville residents will pay $72.60 more a year — $6.05 more a month — in borough taxes in 2014.

The council passed its final $5.9 million budget, which has a 3.63 mill increase. That means the owners of a home assessed at the borough average of $20,000 will pay $891.20 in borough taxes.

Before council voted on the budget Monday night, one resident said he wasn’t too bothered by the tax increase because it wasn’t too high. But another said, “I think this budget stinks” and called it irresponsible.

The council passed the budget unanimously and with little discussion.
Council President Nancy Sherlock said, “It’s a skeleton budget” — not an irresponsible one.

Councilwoman Debbie Smith said, “It was a tough budget to do.”
The 2014 spending plan includes 10 full-time and four part-time police officers and a new police chief. Under this plan, two full-time officers will be on patrol during each shift. The police department budget is

$1.8 million, the same as the current budget.
Borough Manager Tom Bates presented budgets with two other options for the police department.

One would have kept four, full-time officers promoted to corporals, making them supervisors. The rest of the force would have been filled with about 12 part-time officers. This option included a police chief and would have put one full-timer and two part-timers on the streets per shift and cut the police budget to $1.3 million, Bates said.

That “plan also called for council to lay off or fire several of our full-time officers and replace them with the part-timers,” said Councilman Dave Rivella, who will be sworn in as mayor in January. “I do not support any plan that dismantles our police department.”

The final proposal would have involved three full-timers on patrol around the clock and would have raised taxes by 18 mills, or $360, putting the police budget at about $2.3 million.

So much for NW not being political, or trying to help bring people together.

There was a post that was deleted about 15 minutes after it was posted yesterday, but I’m sure I’m not the only one that saw it. It was from someone who stated he was brought on “from Bristol” for advice. His post said

“Trust me when I tell you that you all speak for a quiet majority. Change comes slowly we won a single council seat the first time and a school board seat as well. The two joined forces and now we have two council seats: the mayor; the SB president; Vice President and three at large school board members.

My best advice and I know it’s unsolicited and excuse me if I’m intruding. Be vocal if your not, out smart them, throw them curve balls.

We have four forums; for the public and one very private with a tight circle of like minds.

I ran for council against Ralph DiGuiseppi he killed me but I made him work, I kept him busy. Your group needs to contest EVERY seat next election. Change takes a lot of time.

I think this pretty much proves that NW was formed STRICTLY with political aspirations in mind. What is this person even talking about? Who is NW going to “outsmart”? Is this about what is best for the town or what people that want to be on council will do just to get their way? “Your group needs to contest EVERY seat”……..?????? Let’s hope the town doesn’t fall for it anymore! And funny how quickly it was deleted, even though an admin commented on it in a positive manner. Why the lies??

Interesting. I'll ask Pete once again, why is this a closed group?
How come I can go on FB and read all the RTK stuff but can't get access to the NW page without giving my name? What if I want to know about crime in my neighborhood and get access to info from the MPD ?
Why Pete, why ?

Anonymous said...

What is NW? Neighborhood Watch? That's the same as the Town Watch??? I'm confused.

Anonymous said...

Of course it's political. Rants from William Pepitone were allowed, but a post from Robin Reithmeyer was deleted. The debate was allowed and even put on their events page, but a post from Donna Wilson was deleted. David Rivella was asked to contribute information on a borough subject and then was attacked for it, yet Eileen Dreisbach gives inaccurate information, accuses people of wrong deeds and bullies and it's okay. It's all a little easy to figure out.

I have chosen to take what I need and leave the rest. Meaning, read what I believe is neighborhood watch related and skip the nonsense.

I have not given up on the idea of a neighborhood watch and I believe that the majority of the residents involved have the best intentions. I do wish it some of it wasn't so politically motivated.

Anonymous said...

There's alot of overlap between RTK and NW/TW. Alot of the same people posting on both.
NW/TW claims to be nonpolitical, tells you to put your political things onto RTK. But it's alot of the same people.

Many clearly do not like Rivella and Sherlock, Cicero. On the other hand, Dreishbach, Ledger, Ruthrauff etc get powder puff treatment -- they are not the political targets.Watch out for crime, reunite lost dogs and people. The rest..... bitching & moaning as petty, nasty & ill informed as it comes, including here.

Just like a lot of things in life it is what it is, some good, some bad. Overall it makes you weep for humanity but you try to get what's good out of it and discard the rest like a rotten banana peel.

I think the tw page would be a lot better if they removed the Pepitone puppet Steve big head Huston from its administration, man seems to delight in deleting the positive

People who talk about silent majorities scare me. They really believe their bullsh*t. So now it comes down to controlling the argument and groupthink. I say let them have their circlejerk on their closed and moderated page. If they yell, and no one else is there to listen, who gives a fiddler's fart?

Someone used the word inane. Facebook in general has piles of inane junk on it. Having names with it doesn't make it any less so.

Don't worry pygmies,
My plans are working just fine. Soon the entire town will hate you losers for no other reason than you are yourselves. Your disdain for your neighbors is the perfect Christmas Gift.

LOL um uh okay?.....anyway, meanwhile, in reality, I'm glad the budget has been passed as well.

Mike Honcho, lead troll! I imagine he's a lot less tough in person, but like most ITGs, he tries hard when there are no real consequences. It never ceases to amaze me how some people get so crazy about anyone else getting anything, but they always feel entitled to what they get and never want to pay for it.

Police seek suspect in attempted robbery Christmas Eve

By Jo Ciavaglia Staff writer

MORRISVILLE — Borough police are looking for a man who tried to rob a woman outside a West Trenton Avenue bank on Christmas Eve.

The suspect approached a woman outside the Bank of America ATM shortly before 3 p.m. and tried to grab the woman’s keys out of her hands.

“Give me the keys and you won’t get hurt,” the man said, according to police.

The woman backed away and started screaming while pressing the alarm on her car, according to police. The suspect ran away; he was last seen running north on Pennsylvania Avenue.

The suspect is described as a white man with blond hair, blue eyes, a thin build, 5 feet 8 inches to 5 feet 9 inches, 170 pounds and having a heavy Russian accent, police said. He was wearing dark pants and a hoodie.

If you have any information about this incident or the suspect, contact Morrisville patrolman Bo Luna at 215-295-8111.

Falls farm raises $10K to match $10K challenge grant

Posted: Saturday, December 28, 2013 12:45 pm | Updated: 4:46 pm, Sat Dec 28, 2013.

By Joan Hellyer Staff Writer

FALLS — The Snipes Farm and Education Center raised $10,000 to match a $10,000 challenge grant designed to benefit low-income families, the center’s executive director said Friday.

More than 80 individuals and families have contributed since August toward matching the Eliza Chace Hale Challenge Grant to help the nonprofit organization in Falls raise $20,000 in 2013, Snipes Executive Director Eric Stark said.

“This money will help us advance our mission by allowing us to make more (community supported agriculture) shares available to local low-income families, including those that are homeless or recently coming out of homelessness,” Stark said. “Contributed funds are also used to allow low-income children access to our school-based and summer camp programs.”

The organization’s board of directors has set a $30,000 fundraising goal for the 2014 campaign and is seeking a donor for the challenge grant, he said. “It’s a model we hope to continue well into the future,” Stark said.

Call 215-295-1139 or go to www.snipesfarm.org for more details.

I just read the fb right to know page and Dave Rivella if you read this...wow, no good deed goes unpunished. I don't know how you keep doing what you do for Morrisville or why you would, with all the crap thrown at you. Thanks man.

If the fb rtk pundits had better plans, I could get behind them. They're proving to be another echo chamber of self-righteous blowhardism and dim-bulb kookiness [not all, but many].

Some of the pundits were rejected at the polls or were lame-o when they held office. No thanks, been there, done that. I don't want it again in a different package!

Cops: Drunk man used clothes to clog holding cell toilet

Posted: Monday, December 30, 2013 6:45 pm | Updated: 8:06 pm, Mon Dec 30, 2013.

By Jo Ciavaglia Staff writer

A 31-year-old Morrisville man arrested for public drunkenness now faces vandalism and related charges after he allegedly clogged the toilet in his holding cell in the police department, flooding a computer room.

Bristol Township police estimate Michael McCarthy caused at least $1,000 in damages to the computer room and equipment early Monday morning. It was the second time this year a prisoner has caused damages by flooding a holding cell toilet.

McCarthy was arrested at the Edgely Inn early Monday morning on charges of public drunkenness, a minor non-traffic citation. He was taken to police headquarters and placed in a holding cell until he sobered up or someone picked him up, police said.

McCarthy was combative from the get-go, Lt. Terry Hughes said.

He allegedly tried to damage light fixtures and a monitoring camera in the cell, he said. He also urinated on his cell floor and through the cell block bars in an attempt to urinate on police officers, according to a probable cause affidavit. Finally, McCarthy removed his clothing and stuffed the items into the cell’s toilet, causing it to overflow into the basement computer room, police said.

Police said McCarthy also refused to stand up and be photographed for processing; police used a stun gun to subdue him.

He was arraigned on charges of aggravated harassment by a prisoner, institutional vandalism, resisting arrest and obstructing the law. He was sent to Bucks County prison in lieu of 10 percent of $30,000 bail.

In the same holding cell earlier this year, a 29-year-old Middletown man, angry that he was headed to prison on a probation violation, allegedly used his shirt to clog a toilet, causing $5,000 in damage. Matthew Gulick was also charged with institutional vandalism, aggravated harassment by a prisoner and terroristic threats. He pleaded guilty and was sentenced to two years' probation and ordered to pay $2,242 in restitution.

This is the kind of ingenuity we need to keep right here in Morrisville!
