Out go the modular classrooms. Full-day kindergarten may be next.
Morrisville School District officials are seeking public input on going from full-day kindergarten to half-days for the next school year.
"We're looking at streamlining and improving the educational process for our students," school board President John DeWilde said. "There are some different choices we need to discuss and evaluate."
Parents can have their say about a full-day or half-day kindergarten program at Tuesday's Superintendent Advisory meeting scheduled to start at 7 p.m.
"At the present time we have full-day kindergarten, but the temporary modulars play a major role in what we can do now and what we have to do going forward," school Director Wanda Kartal said.
The school board last month voted to not renew the modular classrooms contract for the 2012-13 school year.
The four modular classrooms were initially erected at Grandview Elementary to house M.R. Reiter Elementary students after a 2008 furnace explosion left their school unusable. Reiter students now attend classes at Grandview. Each modular unit holds two classrooms for a total of eight classrooms.
With the modular classrooms gone next year, the administration is also left with reconfiguring classrooms at Morrisville High School, which could accommodate more elementary level students. The school now is home to fourth-graders and up. The issue will also be discussed at Tuesday's meeting.
The board created facilities and finance advisory committees, on which parents can serve, to deal with such issues. Interested parents can contact Barbara Bucuy at the high school for details.
The school board is also looking into hiring a broker to come up with a plan for the vacant M.R. Reiter building on Hillcrest Avenue and the former Head Start building on Penn Avenue.
Tuesday's meeting will be at the LGI Building at Morrisville High School, 550 W. Palmer St.

The 2 comments on the article so far cover 2 ends of the spectrum. I agree with the first commenter.

I am not familiar with the Kindergarten program in Morrisville; but in Bristol Township our full-day Kindergarten program is NOTHING like a baby-sitting service. Our students make great strides in learning to read, write and do math. They get exposed to art. music, physical education and library classes, as well as using the computer lab. They learn to share, work together, and they learn responsibility. The hands-on science that focuses on living things (trees and fish as examples) is a great program. The teachers are dedicated. While full-day Kindergarten isn't mandated by the state--- it should be. The benefits of the program are enormous.

Never should have started full-day "K" in the first place. Call it what it is - taxpayer funded baby sitting service...or daycare.
"...Barbara Bucuy..." She's still there? Wow!
Always enjoyed working with her - glad to read she's still there!
Truly a dedicated district employee!

I haven't heard anything good about "Mrs. B" in terms of her competence on the job. Showing up is one thing. Doing a good job when you show up is another.

You do not have to be a parent to be on the advisory committees, it is open to all community members interested in helping be a part of the solutions
