Potluck #44

Pounding lumps of sand down rat holes for nearly 1 full year now.  A lot can change in 1 year's time.

What's on your minds?

I got one: video from the 3/28 board mtg. is now on district webiste. It's in 2 parts.

Problem is, the sound craps out 33 mins into Part 2, and then it goes on for 40 mins with no sound, and ends before the mtg’s over.

Whazzup with that?

I noticed the same thing. Malfunction??

I'm disappointed. I wanted to see the video and audio of Ron Stout's remarks in the discussions on half-day Kindergarten.

He's lucky if the tape is toast. Less people will get to see his insensitive, inappropriate unbefitting a SB member clodlike statement.

You sound as if you think he he would care one iota. I doubt it. Some people feel no shame, have no remorse or empathy.

BRISTOL SCHOOLS
A $800,000 gap may lead to program cuts in Bristol

By GEMA MARIA DUARTE Staff writer | 0 comments
To make ends meet, Bristol School District officials are playing with numbers, including those involving possible program cuts that could lead to employee layoffs.
Both the administration and the school board hope it doesn't get to that as they try to cover an $800,000 deficit in the 2012-13 school year budget.

But just in case it does, the district needs to be ready. So the administration is drafting a letter to the Pennsylvania Department of Education to gain approval to curtail available program should that be necessary. Increases in employee health insurance and pension fund, and charter school costs attribute to the budget hole.
Included in the proposed budget for now is about $500,000 to cover the costs of 53 students in charter or cyber schools. The district pays about $10,000 per general education charter student, and approximately $22,000 for each special education student who attends a charter school, officials have said.
The teachers contract expires Aug. 31, so the district's preliminary budget includes salary increases of about 2½ percent, for a cost of about $277,000. In addition, the proposed budget includes a 9 percent increase for health insurance, which amounts to $185,000. Also, the district will have to fork out another $188,000 for contributions to the state retirement system for local teachers.
Any program curtailment, which could mean teacher cuts, has to be approved by the school board and by PDE, Superintendent Gregory Wright said.
"In order to furlough staff in Pennsylvania, you can't simply cut staff for economic reasons, meaning because you don't have enough money to pay them," he said. "You are only permitted to cut programs. This is why you see things like the arts and music programs being cut across the state. You can't cut math, but you can cut business classes or industrial arts or other programs that have suffered under No Child Left Behind. In our case, and in most other districts, there just isn't much left to cut but we will look at every possible scenario."
Programs can be downsized under the school code for two reasons. For one, the district has to prove it has experienced significant loss of enrollment. Secondly, the school district must show it has a better educational program available, Wright said.
He added that the possible cuts can include administration programs, not only educational.
The small district has 89 teachers, five administrators, 12 secretaries and about eight custodians.
The letter to the PDE is expected to be completed by the April 19 school board meeting for discussion and possibly approval. The letter will detail the proposed cuts.
