A stormwater basin is to be a park for birdwatchers in Lower Makefield. In Morrisville, a field of weeds soon could become a riverside trail. And in Springfield, a portion of Cooks Creek would be left to flow free.
Grants approved on Wednesday by the Bucks County commissioners would help to preserve or improve some 81 acres in Upper and Lower Bucks.
The largest grant of $386,000 allows for the purchase of 7 acres off West Ferry and Big Oak roads in Lower Makefield.
A portion of the property contains a stormwater basin, to be replanted with native species, said Kris Kerns, Bucks open space coordinator. “There are a few pedestrian access points and there are plans to add a trail for walking and bird watching.”
Another $276,362 grant will go toward the purchase of 65.6 acres off Slifer Road in Springfield. “The land has approximately 2,000 feet of the Cooks Creek tributary on it,” said Kerns. “Springfield has asked us to contribute 50 percent of the purchase price for the property. They will be contributing the remaining 50 percent.”
The final grant of $24,615 will help improve 8.5 acres along the Delaware River in Morrisville, officials said. The borough owns the property, just south of the intersection of Delmorr and Philadelphia avenues.
The grant is to help pay for tree plantings, trail clearing and educational signs, officials said. Earlier this year, Morrisville received a federal Coastal Zone Management grant to remove Japanese knotweed, which infested the property.
Morrisville is asking if you can help with the project, beginning in two weeks. A riverfront cleanup is scheduled from 9 a.m. to noon on April 14. A seeding project is scheduled for 9 a.m. on April 21. If you can help, bring work gloves and wear sturdy shoes.
