They are the best and brightest, high school graduates who not only excel in academics, but also are leaders in their communities.
The Courier Times and The Intelligencer have selected outstanding seniors from throughout the area as John Fisher Citizen Scholars for 2012. The award is presented in memory of John Fisher, an ordained minister and invaluable member of the staff of the newspapers as well as a cherished community leader.
Holy Ghost Preparatory High School
John Hayden
Class rank: School doesn't rank.
Achievements: Member of student government and served as student body president; commended National Merit Scholar and member of the National Honor Society. Won the Liebermann Scholarship for academic performance and participates in Mathletes, the French Club and campus ministry. He played soccer; school tour guide; and participates on the Debate Team.
Community service: Participates in AID for Friends; volunteers at our Mother of Sorrows Soup Kitchen in Philadelphia; volunteers for the New Hope 5K run to benefit the homeless; and participates in the Community Service Corps. Went on a mission trip to the Dominican Republic and ran a camp for children.
Counselor's comments: He's a natural leader who has proven his ability to rally school spirit. His academic intelligence has resulted in numerous awards. Community service has been a top priority. I am always amazed at how much he is able to squeeze into a 24-hour period. His energy is boundless and combined with his enthusiasm, ambition and intelligence, he is one of the top members of his class.

Cassidy Shemelia
Class rank: 17
Achievements: Class treasurer; a member of Future Business Leaders of America; sings in the school chorus; plays field hockey and participates in cross country events.
Community service: Volunteers in the Life Skills classrooms and with the Morrisville Ambulance Squad; YMCA volunteer and participates in the Robert Morris outreach summer program. Volunteers for Operation Christmas Child and cancer fundraisers.
Counselor's comments: She's hardworking and committed to her volunteer work, both inside and outside her school community.
