Makefield Elementary School celebrates completion of green renovations
June 21, 2011 By mallen

Makefield Elementary School, Pennsbury School District’s oldest operating school, has become the District’s most contemporary school with the completion of its recent renovations and many “green features.” To mark the completion of this $12.7 million renovation and construction project, the entire school came out to celebrate on Friday, June 3rd.
Under a picture perfect blue sky, students and teachers gathered on the front parking lot of the school, which first opened in 1930. It became a community celebration as alumni, former teachers and staff members, along with local officials, family members and friends came to join the festivities. “It was important to us that these renovations preserved the architecture of this old building so it remained the quaint school it is today while adding new features that are environmentally sustainable,” said Principal Donna McCormick-Miller, addressing the audience. “The final result is a nice blend of the old and the new,” she added.
The modifications and upgrades to the school will earn it a LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) silver rating in environmental design. Included in its upgrades are features such as its green roof, a rainwater garden (located outside of the front bus lane), solar panels, a porous pavement, and day lighting (a result of installing new windows, energy-efficient low flow bathroom fixtures and non-toxic finishes).
“Today, Makefield Elementary School has become a state-of-the art ‘green’ school that can be used as a teaching tool for future generations of students,” said Principal McCormick-Miller. In addition, these latest renovations have made Makefield a model for future green buildings. A total of 19,975 square feet of space was added to the school. As a result, the school has reclaimed the basement that had been previously used for storage.
Today, this lower level has been transformed into new music and band rooms with an acoustic wall that opens up and allows for large groups such as band and chorus. Other additions include four new classrooms, a new media center and a cafetorium. Principal McCormick-Miller thanked everyone responsible for making these many upgrades a reality, including members of the School Board, Lower Makefield Township, the architects involved in the construction and design, and State Representative Steve Santarsiero, who was “instrumental in helping move this project along.”
She also thanked the students for their patience and flexibility during this renovation process. “I can tell by their expressions as they walk along our halls that they are very excited about going to a state-of-the-art school.” During the ceremony, students from each grade entertained the audience by singing upbeat, inspirational songs like “Hello World,” “God Bless the USA,” and “All I Really Need.”
Forth and fifth grade essay winners read from their essays, explaining why they believe Makefield Elementary School is so special. One fifth grader summed it up by saying, “This is a lot more than just a place to learn or a building. It’s a community, a place to be with friends and a home to many of us.”
Surrounded by people who helped contribute to the school’s renovations, Principal McCormick-Miller concluded the morning ceremony by cutting a red ribbon by the school’s front entrance.

I did a little self-tour of the school (Makefield Elementary) at the tail end of the Expo. Very impressive renovations.
