Records show lowest voter turnout in years

BUCKS COUNTY ELECTIONS - Only 11.56 percent of registered voters in Bucks turned out to the polls in Tuesday's primary election, according to preliminary counts from the board of elections.
But not all voters could cast a ballot in Tuesday's primary, only registered Republicans and Democrats.
Even so, the turnout was the lowest for a municipal primary in years, records show.
While local political officials said the exact reason for such low numbers is near impossible to pinpoint, they agree that it is likely a combination of factors, including voter apathy, rainy weather, favorable views toward officials in office and a significant amount of uncontested races.
The voter turnout was the lowest for a municipal primary in Bucks since at least 2003, according to records. The 2009 municipal primary drew 12.79 percent of voters to the polls - a huge drop-off from the 21.99 percent that voted in the 2007 municipal primary.
Before the spike in 2007, voter turnout for municipal primaries had been on an upswing.
More than 14 percent of voters participated in 2003. Just less than 17 percent voted in 2005.
Regarding Tuesday's numbers, one county Republican Party official said the main factor could have been the public's favorable view of the job being done by current administrations throughout the county.
"I know that typically when we've seen people happy with what's going on, they often don't make the effort to come out," said Pat Poprik, vice chairwoman of the Bucks County Republican Committee. "When people feel there is a significant reason to come to the polls or if they feel a change is needed, they will come out in droves."
"We took (Tuesday's turnout) as a subtle, but meaningful, indication that people like the job that many Republican governments already in place have been doing," she added. "I think people know that the big one is in November and they will come back to the polls. There just was not much opposition this time around; no big battles."
John Cordisco, chairman of the Bucks County Democratic Committee, on Wednesday said that sometimes voters can become apathetic toward a local primary.
"Once the campaigns take flight (leading up to November) we'll get a real sense of how great voter apathy really is," he added. "Also, Tuesday's numbers could be skewed by the weather. If it was clear and sunny the numbers would be much more telling."
With seniors making up a large portion of the voters who traditionally make it to the polls for local primaries, Cordisco said, the rainy weather could have led many to stay home.
The Democratic Party in Bucks relies on a high voter turnout, he added.
"We need to see a higher turnout in November," he said. "We have traditionally run behind (the Republican turnout). But if there is a high voter turnout in general, it seems the voters are more apt to vote for our candidates. This is an indication that the independents often turn toward the Democratic candidates."
Both Cordisco and Poprik said they are not particularly concerned about Tuesday's low figures and are confident that Bucks residents will come out in force in November.

Hello? Hello? Is this thing on? Anyone? Anyone? Buehler? Buehler?

I am pleased to see that the MM candidates held their own ion the primary, and the SOC appears scared, as the democrats outnumbered the republicans, and if this trend holds true for the fall, the MM should be able to take the 4 seats. I was dismayed to see that Mr. Worob received the support he did, as I think he's done enough damage to the Ville over the years, and I would think it's time for the town to move on to new people with new ideas. On the other hand, should the board become more balanced, with neither side holding the upper hand in all issues, I think this can only be good, as perhaps some compromise will lead to less rancor and more civil open debate.

A certain Stay On Course current board member personally called 2 or more current district employees, on or before election day (May 17), to tell them their 'jobs are safe'.

Let's hope the employees understood the message clearly and voted to Stay on Course.

just like the budget from Jan. to may 17th its was 2.5 million over and the day after poof it's not that high anymore it was just a "wish list" budget so all the SOC'ers are patting each others back on the good job they did. which was in fact was to scare voters into thing we were 2.5 million in the hole when in fact Marlis knew as early as Feb. it was more like 17 million

Quite a message, quite an implied threat. What a despicable way to operate, if its true (I have no trouble believing it, the long track record is there).
Don't worry, relative of allied Boro Councilperson, and Historical Society affiliate, we'll protect YOU.
No shame, no ethics.
Nobody really knows how they voted or...does Stay on Course have access to that?

No prize, just the amazement of the blogosphere.

Q: In whose name is the Morrisville High School Building dedicated?

A: ???

If you're like me, you've probably walked past the answer many times and didn't notice.

I think Mihok already tipped the board's hand (no pun intended) about Morrisville's budget:

"When the final budget is approved, Mihok predicted that it will be pared to $17.9 million so there will be no deficit."

Whatever spending inflation/gimmickry is in the preliminary budget will go away when it's time to make a serious budget and adopt it in the April-June timeframe. This first one's just for show, so certain board members can hero-worship themselves and the Business Manager in a few months when what looks like a giant deficit goes away.

two aides (could be more) told a few people that they received info before the primary that their jobs were guaranteed and would not be cut. For those paying attention that info was put out before the adjusted budget was given to the public last night and before it has been passed. Do you think that was a Ploy to get votes??? Do you think that person gave out confidential info that they are under oath to protect? Do you think they used their position to hold their jobs over their heads? Lets hope that when everyone decides enough is enough its in november so we can get some decent people onto the board and rest at night. I have not seen anything out of MM except fact but out of those soc'ers! all you have to do is read above and see what they are doing behind our backs. people wake up

4 aides at Grandview, 5 aides at High School just got fired.

0 peeps about it at last night's board meetings.

yep, campaign promise...We have not cut jobs, not 1 aide, not 1 program, not 1 teacher!!!...Post-Campaign reality...Oops we forgot to mention the 10 aides we had planned to cut all along.
Now thats how you keep the public on your side

Is the rumor true?

so very proud of all the kids who participated in the concert tonight and displayed their artwork. Seriously felt like I was at a museum...Can there really be that many talented kids in one building? Wow...So impressed! and the chorus and bands played their hearts out. So many of these kids have been together since Kindergarden and to see them grow every year is really an honor. Thanks for a great night at MHS! (yes I am quite proud of my son as well! great drum and trumpet playing)

Not a rumor

Dewilde went ballastic and Ferrara was rude to a parent @ last nite's spring concert when parent asked about the future of the band next year.

Anonymous said...

what's ballastic?

Anonymous said...

Did they tag team this parent or was it two different incidences?

Anonymous said...

Ferrara is always rude

Anonymous said...

Sorry, I meant ballistic, like over the top angry.

It was a tag team (single incident).

As far as the firing of the 10 aides goes, that was just Round 1. Round 2 will probably occur within the next few weeks. Stay tuned to see who get K.O'd next.

"We will not fire para educators or classroom aides and in fact hired four more."
